The ‘man’
behind Gandhibhavan is Punalur Somarajan. The boy who was born at the East of Punalur
came to be known through his humble and kind deeds. Though he was terribly disturbed by mother’s illness,
her treatment, death and various other ordeals of time, he withstood everything
and showed brilliance in establishing various organisations for children, youth
etc- Yes; it was the hunble beginning of a great social worker.

‘Rajan’
the fevorite of Punlur Villagers began his sociel work in his own willage. He
learned his early lessons of social work from his father Chellappan. Though he
had a misserable life, he sheltered the wandering beggers, insane people, and
orphans and consoled them. He was
working as a parallel collage teacher; he borne the responsibilities of the
State General Secretary of All India Radio Clubs Organisation and as State
Secretary of Dedicataion Council. During this time he penned stories, poems,
novels, articles in different newspapers and magazines. It is an added asset
that Akashavani (A. I. R) broadcasted his light musics and short plays and thus
announced his presence. He was a columnist in Janayugam daily too. Later, when
he enterd the business field, he lead various social activities all over the
state. During his childhod, he was to
see Arya Bhatta Swamikal, who was a very close friend of his father. At first
glance itself Swami commented. Rajan
as “very energetic. . . . And he will be
useful to the mankind”. As a
piece of advice he said “Read and think profoundly, study the life and works of
Narayana Swami”. Somarajan who tried to learn more about Guru was attracted
towards the secular views of Guruji and became the State General Secretary of
Sree Narayana Study Circle.
As
he cannot fix himself in a purticular field, he changed his arena of working
frequently as state General Secratery of Human Rights, General Secratery of All
Kerala Hotel Merchants Association of Kollam district which is a branch of All
Kerala Vyapary Vyavasai Association, and later as its State Secretary. Thus he
proved his mettlel in various fields/positions. |
